Yearly salary $50,000 ÷ Work hours / yr 2,080 = $24.04 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, the standard full-time year.
$50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour at 40 hours a week.

How to convert a salary to an hourly wage

The core formula is simple: divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a standard full-time job that is 2,080 hours — 40 hours a week times 52 weeks — so a $50,000 salary comes to $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour. Going the other way is just as easy: multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and then by 52.

The reason a calculator helps is that real schedules aren't always 40 and 52. If you work 37.5 hours, take unpaid leave, or only get paid for 50 weeks, your true hourly rate is higher than the quick "divide by 2,080" estimate suggests. The tool above lets you set your actual hours per week and weeks per year, then shows the same pay as an hourly, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly and yearly figure all at once — which is exactly what you need when a job is advertised in one unit and you think in another.

Common salaries as an hourly wage

At 40 hours a week (2,080 hours a year), before tax:

YearlyPer hourPer weekPer month
$30,000$14.42$577$2,500
$40,000$19.23$769$3,333
$50,000$24.04$962$4,167
$60,000$28.85$1,154$5,000
$75,000$36.06$1,442$6,250
$100,000$48.08$1,923$8,333

Why the "2,080 hours" number matters

2,080 is the figure most salary comparisons quietly assume, and it's worth knowing because it explains a lot of confusion about pay. When a recruiter says a role pays "around $25 an hour" and another says "$52,000 a year," they're describing almost the same money — $52,000 ÷ 2,080 is exactly $25. Once you can flip between the two in your head, advertised rates stop being a guessing game.

It also reveals the catch with hourly work: a salaried worker is paid the same whether the month has four weeks or five, but an hourly worker's monthly pay rises and falls with the number of shifts. That's why this tool reports a monthly figure as an average (annual ÷ 12) rather than pretending every month is identical.

Hourly to salary

To run it the other way, set the "Per" dropdown to Hour and type your hourly rate. The calculator multiplies by your weekly hours and 52 to give the yearly equivalent, then breaks that down across the other pay periods. So $22 an hour at 40 hours becomes $45,760 a year, $3,813 a month, or $1,760 every two weeks.

Gross vs take-home

One honest caveat: every figure here is gross — before income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any benefits come out. Your actual paycheck will be smaller, and exactly how much smaller depends on your state, filing status and deductions. Use these numbers to compare offers and understand rates; for the amount that lands in your bank account, a state paycheck calculator is the right next step.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual salary by the hours you work in a year — 2,080 for a standard full-time job. A $50,000 salary is about $24.04 an hour.

What is $50,000 a year per hour?

At 40 hours a week, $50,000 a year is roughly $24.04 an hour before tax.

How many work hours are in a year?
